Searching for Low-mass Population III Stars Disguised as White Dwarfs

چکیده

Abstract It is uncertain whether or not low-mass Population III stars ever existed. While limits on the number density of with M * ≈ 0.8 ⊙ have been derived, using Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data, little known about occurrence at lower masses. In absence reliable parallaxes, spectra metal-poor main-sequence (MPMS) ≲ can easily be confused those cool white dwarfs. To resolve this ambiguity, in paper we present a classifier that differentiates between MPMS and dwarfs, based photometry and/or spectroscopy without use parallax information. We build train our state-of-the-art theoretical spectra, evaluate it existing SDSS-based classifications for objects Gaia DR2 parallaxes. then apply to large catalog SDSS search candidates. discover several previously unknown, extremely (EMP) candidate stars, recover numerous confirmed EMP already noted literature. conclude archival has exhaustively searched stars. predict lowest-mass primordial composition will redder optical-to-infrared colors than dwarfs constant effective temperature, due surface gravity-dependent collision-induced absorption from molecular hydrogen. suggest application data produced by next-generation spectroscopic surveys set stronger constraints Milky Way.

Low Mass Companions to White Dwarfs

This paper summarizes the results of over 17 years of work searching for low mass stellar and substellar companions to more than 370 nearby white dwarfs. Roughly 60 low mass, unevolved companions were found and studied all together, with over 20 discovered in the last few years, including the first unambiguous brown dwarf companion to a white dwarf, GD 1400B. The resulting spectral type distrib...

Revised Metallicity Classes for Low - Mass Stars : Dwarfs ( Dm ) , Subdwarfs

The current classification system of M stars on the main sequence distinguishes three metallicity classes (dwarfs dM, subdwarfs sdM, and extreme subdwarfs esdM). The spectroscopic definition of these classes is based on the relative strength of prominent CaH and TiO molecular absorption bands near 7000, as quantified by three spectroscopic indices (CaH2, CaH3, and TiO5). The boundaries between ...

Old White Dwarfs as a Microlensing Population

A popular interpretation of recent microlensing studies of the line of sight towards the Large Magellanic Cloud invokes a population of old white dwarf stars in the Galactic halo. Below I review the basic properties of old white dwarf stars and the ongoing efforts to detect this population directly.

A search for pulsations among low-mass DAO white dwarfs

We performed a search for periodic light variations among low-mass DAO white dwarfs. These objects have theoretically been predicted to exhibit low-order g-mode pulsations due to a potent mechanism in hydrogen-burning shells according to model calculations of Charpinet et al. (1997). No pulsations were detected in any of our nine candidate stars. This can be attributed to the very narrow instab...

A search for radio pulsars around low-mass white dwarfs

Low-mass white dwarfs can either be produced in low-mass X-ray binaries by stable mass transfer to a neutron star, or in a common-envelope phase with a heavier white dwarf companion. We have searched 8 low-mass white dwarf candidates recently identified in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey for radio pulsations from pulsar companions, using the Green Bank Telescope at 340MHz. We have found no pulsati...
